Drills That Kills

Drum solo choregraphy

A 3 hour workshop featuring a unique and challenging drum solo choregraphy by Suhaila Salimpour. This workshop will give you a new and unique choregraphy that you will be able to take home with you, and continue to challenge you.

Day 2

Jamila Salimpour format

A 3 hour workshop featuring the format that has been the base and foundation for western dancers.

Jamila’s Classes

Jamila Salimpour was the first belly dance teacher to create a specific format of movements with individual names for each step. The steps she created are now the majority of belly dance movements taught today. Her format was the inspiration and foundation of what later became known as American Tribal Style. The names of the steps were often originated from people Jamila personally witnessed doing that movement. For example, Jamila named figure eights up to down Maya because she saw Maya Medwar doing them at a club in Los Angeles back in the 1950’s.
Jamila is also the master of finger cymbals, playing unique and difficult patterns, often experimenting with the upbeat. Her award winning instructional CD is also the most prolific tool in learning how to play cymbals used both in the Jamila and Suhaila certification program.

Folkloric Fusion

A 3 hour workshop mixing Jamila and Suhaila’s formats to create and exciting and dynamic workshop!

Folkloric Fusion

Folkloric Fusion is a class created by Suhaila Salimpour mixing cymbals with belly dance (both Suhaila and Jamila’s formats), folkloric steps and dance movement. This is a fun class to really just get moving. Dancers of all levels are recommended to take Folkloric Fusion. This class often includes live drumming and explanations of different Middle Eastern rhythms (often in 6/8’s or 9’s). It will also improve cymbal technique exponentially. The class focuses on all types of patterns but also makes dancers move outside of their safety zone with cymbals, having them separate the concept of playing cymbals from their body movement. This is key in being able to do any arm, hand, or body patterns without it affecting the cymbal work. Folkloric Fusion is a great class for all belly dancers.
(Note: steps are explained in both JSBD and SSBD terminology)

How to Prepare for a Workshop

Due to the physically intensive nature and duration of Suhaila’s workshops, we recommend you prepare in two or more of the following ways at least two weeks in advance of your workshop date:

• Leg strengthening exercises including calf raises and stretching
• 20 minutes of cardio 3-5 times a week
• Familiarize yourself with Suhaila’s format using Bellydance for Beginners with Suhaila: Fitness Fusion 4 Volume Set (Buns, Jazz, Pilates, Yoga) and with Suhaila’s warm-up by using her Stretch & Tone DVD
• Practice finger cymbal patterns from Jamila Salimpour’s Finger Cymbal CD and Finger Cymbal Manual
• Review Level 1 Study Guide and the full certification technique manual
• Study the Jamila Salimpour format through her format manual, The Dance Orientale, and through the DVD Archive Series 4 volume set

What to Bring

• Finger cymbals (Suhaila’s signature cymbals available for purchase at the studio)
• Yoga mat (for use during the warm-up if you need cushioning for some of the exercises on the floor)
• Deodorant / antiperspirant (bring with you to the actual workshop to reapply as necessary)
• Ballet or jazz shoes for dance movement (and to protect the balls of your feet if they get tender)
• Hand towel
• A separate set of workout clothes for each day and potentially extra clothes in case you wish to change at lunch time
• Refillable water bottle marked with your name
• Hip scarves, if you like, but please none with beads or coins
• Name and phone number of your chosen emergency contact
• Contact information for your medical insurance and physician (if applicable)
